I have the highest hope and respect for that client but I have the feeling they have been in bad hands in advisory. This company is delivering software as a service and I want to make this article as anonymous as possible.

I believe running a software as a service or in general a technology company requires the right mindset, a right chief technology officer that knows the market, knows the technology and is ambitious enough to drive the company to the next steps continuously.
What can we do about it?
There are different levels of investments and businesses, in my personal opinion and based on the facts and statistics from the market, majority of technology companies do not make money. They are not profit-focused companies but rather growth-oriented because they are building intellectual property within that organization and that makes only good amount of money if the company grows and goes public or exit for the investors. Imagine you invest 100 tousands usd in a company. if that company makes 20K USD in 10 years for your shares you are in lost. if you focus to make money out of your investment immediately, you are killing the cashflow as well as innovation and reinvestment opportunity coming with that.
My client has an advisor and I talked to that advisor. after a couple of minutes I decied not to listen to him anymore or even convince him that his opinion might be wrong. Please don’t get me wrong, there might be lots of good technology-oriented business advisors that gives you life changing and good advise but this advisor’s opinion was ‘technology is cheap’ and ‘software development must be cheap’. I can’t stand statements like this at all and I don’t engage in conversations that believe building IP and building technology must be cheap. There are different layer and dimension of building technology and I agree that lots of these parts should be cost optimized. This advisor also told me that my client must bring the software development process and team in house and my eyes was so big hearing this from that advisor with the reason, that the IP should stay within the company. I totally agree that IP should stay within the company, but IP is the process, integration, network, trade secret, contracts, relationship, business logic, business rules and many other aspects.

I can see my client is surviving and barely make money because their advisors.
